An Afternoon of Spiritual Delights

With Halloween season upon us, a little emotional witchery would be a great topic. Fall is that time of year when the Universe asks us to begin to prepare to release and let go of the things that have gone unused and unneeded and those that have been disserving. It is a time of year for journeyers to turn inward and begin exploring their shadows, wishes, and unrealized dreams. It is the time of year I am reminded to turn inward through journaling with the help of my Tarot.

An afternoon delight with my tea and Tarot is a ritual of emotional witchcraft. These beautiful breezy fall afternoons, on top of my mountain of solace, I conjure up a hot cup of reviving herbs to warm my hands and belly. I light a spice candle to fill my space with the season’s essence. I ring the bells, clearing my space as I stand in the middle of my room and call upon the four directions and, with them, my spiritual guides and ancestors to share the wisdom of the Universe. This sacred ritual has followed me through many years of shadow work and personal growth.

When my space is ready, and my mind is clear and focused on the question, I work my cards. Some days, it is a simple lay of past, present, and future. Some days, it is more complex, like a Celtic cross or horseshoe. Today, it will be the 12-card spread for the year ahead. For me, Fall is the perfect time to reflect upon last year’s 12-card spread and see what has come to pass, where I am currently, and how the remainder of the year will go. It is also a time for me to prepare for what is to come, what has yet to be revealed, and what is yet to be seen within me.

The Tarot can be used for such work. Shadow work is a powerful practice that involves exploring the unconscious parts of ourselves—those aspects we often repress or ignore. Tarot can be a valuable tool in this process, helping to cast a light on hidden emotions and beliefs, often limiting our personal, professional, spiritual, and creative growth. Tarot can also be a powerful tool for self-care, offering insights that promote reflection for growth.

How To Create a Tarot Self-Care Practice

You can create a self-care Tarot practice by pulling a card each morning to set your intention for the day. Reflect on the card’s message and how it relates to your emotional or mental state.

Consider creating a simple self-care spread:

  • Card 1:  What do I need today?
  • Card 2: How can I nurture myself this week?

Journaling your responses can deepen your understanding and help you integrate the guidance into your routine.

Embracing Emotions

  • If a card evokes strong emotions, allow yourself to feel them fully. Consider questions like:
    • Why does this card affect me so deeply?
    • What past experiences might be influencing my reaction?

How To Use Tarot in Shadow Work

Shadow work is more complex. As both the reader and the participant you must be willing to be honest with yourself and be open to the card’s messages. This is not a time for omission, deflection, or swapping out cards. Instead, if a card’s message makes you shutter, or cringe see it as an opportunity for reflection. Give yourself time with the cards too. They are not going anywhere.

Ideas for Shadow Work Spread

Three-Card Spread:

  • Card 1: What do I reject in myself?
  • Card 2: How does this affect my life?
  • Card 3: What can I do to integrate this aspect?

The Mirror Technique:

  • Pull a card and think of someone you struggle with.
  • Ask:
    • What does this card reveal about my own traits?

This helps you see how your perceptions of others reflect your inner self.

Incorporating Shadow Work into Self-Care

Shadow work is often not seen as part of self-care. We tend to focus on the lighter aspects of our self; instead focusing on the positive self-image in self-care. But we cannot truly be well with knowing and healing our whole self, including the shadow.

Daily Reflection:

  • Each day, pull a card and ask:
    • What part of my shadow needs attention today?

Use this as a prompt for journaling or meditation.

Healing Rituals

  • After a shadow work session, engage in self-care practices that nurture your spirit. This could include:
    • Meditation or sound bath
    • Nature walks or Yoga
    • Creative expression or Art Therapy

Final Thoughts

Shadow work can be challenging, but it is also incredibly rewarding. By using Tarot as a guide, you can uncover hidden aspects of yourself, leading to deeper self-acceptance and healing. Always approach this work with compassion and patience for yourself.
